    Description

The Maxwell House brand of coffee was born in 1892, created by a grocer named Joel Owsley Cheek and named in honor of the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. The hotel stood until 1961,infamously known as the scene of the first national meeting of the Ku Klux Klan in 1867. The newly-incorporated General Foods Company bought the Maxwell House brand in the late 1920s and advertised it extensively in print and on the radio with stars such as George Burns and Gracie Allen and The Goldbergs. Soldiers were given instant Maxwell House Coffee during World War II and looked for the product when they returned home.
This can was filled by Cheek's company, so it dates to before the General Foods purchase in 1929 and before the company began selling vacuum-packed coffee in the late 1930s.
    It measures 6 x 4.25 inches (15 x 11 cm)
and is in decent condition given its age. Although discolored in places, the paper label is tight around the the can and the Maxwell House logo and hotel picture are visible. Perfect for the committed or casual coffee can collector given that Maxwell House is still sold today (and is a unique ebay category). It could be a nice accent piece, a touch of the jazz and flapper 1920s in your space or room. Or it could be for that something special you want to keep hidden from the rest of the world.
